FIGURE5-37SurfaceConcreteCracksObservedinCrackMappingAreaNo.45-38SurfaceConcreteCracks<ObservedinCrackMappingAreaNo.6L5-395-40ComparisonofVerticalExtensionMeasuredbyEx-tensometersV22and.V23WithVerticalExtensionsMeasuredbyExtensometersV19ThroughV21andV24ComparisonofRadialDeformationsMeasuredbyDialGagesandExtensometersatSimilarElevationsandAzimuths III 1.INTRODUCTIONTheSusquehannaSteamElectricStation'sunitoneprimarycontainmentwassubjectedtothestructuralacceptancetestduringtheperiodofJanuary15and16,1977.Thepurposeofthetestwastodemonstratethestructure'sabilitytowithstandthepostulatedpressureloadsbypressurizingitto115percentofitsdesignpressures.Thecontainmentisareinforcedconcretestructureconsist-ingofacylindricalsuppressionchamberbeneathaconicaldrywell.Thestructureisconsideredtobeaprototypeforthreereasons(seeReference1):(1)thediaphragmslabseparatingthe,twochambersisconnectedtothewall;(2)diagonalreinforcementwasused;and(3)thedrywelldomeisnotspherical.Inordertogaininformationforfuturesim-ilarcontainments,strainsensingdeviceswereembeddedatvariouslocationsinthestructuresothatstrainscouldbemonitoredduringthetest.Deformationswerealsomonitoredandtherelationbetweenstrainanddeformationisdiscussedinthisreport.ThetestwasdoneinaccordancewithReference1withthefollowingsixexceptions:P1)Acontinuousincreaseincontainmentpressure,ratherthanincrementalpressureincreases,wasused.Thisisconsideredjustifiablesincedataobservationsateachpressurelevelweremaderapidly."Rapidly"isdefinedasrequiringatimeintervalforthedatapointsamplesufficientlyshortsothatthechangeinpressureduringtheobservationwouldcauseachangeinstructuralresponseoflessthanfivepercentofthetotalantici-patedchange.Also,themaximumrateofpressurizationwaslimitedto3psig/hourtoensurethatthe.structurerespondedtothepressureloadwithoutanytimelag.2)Thedistributionofmeasuringpointsformonitoringradialdeflectionswasselectedsothattheas-builtconditioncouldbeconsideredintheassessmentofthegeneralshellresponse.Ingeneral,thelocationsofmeasuringpointsforradialdeflectionswasinagreementwithRef-erence1,figureB,exceptpoint1.Point1wasprovidedatadistanceoftwotimesthewallthickness(12feet)fromthebasemat.Thisvariationwasmadetoproperlypredictthecontainmentbehaviornearthebasemattowallconnection.Ifpoint1hadbeenlocatedataheightofthreetimesthewallthickness(18feet),itwouldhavebeenveryclosetopoint2(suppressionchamberwallmidheightis26feet)andwouldnothaveyieldedany.addi-tionalbehaviorpatternofthecontainment.

III 3)Someofthestraingageinstrumentationwasfartherfr'omtheequipmenthatchthan0.5timesthewallthickness(3feet)asrequiredbyReferencel,pararaphC.5.Thiswasnecessaryinordertoclearreinforcementandiscon-sideredjustifiablesincetheintentoftheRegulatoryGuidewasmet;i.e.,todemonstratethestructuralinte-grityofthecontainment.4)Tangentialdeflectionsofthecontainmentwalladjacenttotheequipmenthatchwerenotmeasuredbecausethepre-dictedvaluesoftangentialdeflectionwereverysmallanditwouldhavebeendifficulttoobtainfixedreferencepointsformeasurementoflocaltangentialdeflections.5)Becauseofthecurrentstateoftheart,triaxialconcretestrainmeasurements,whiletaken,werenotusedtoeval-uatetheconcretestraindistribution.Theconcretestrainwasevaluatedusinglinearstrainmeasurementsinthemeridionalandhoopdirections.6)Humidityinsidethecontainmentwasnotmeasuredduringthetest'sinceitdoesnotcontributetotheresponseofthestructure.

~~1IlII l)I2.SUMMARYANDCONCLUSIONSIThecontainmentstructurewithstood115percentofthedesignpressureswithnoindicationofstructuraldistress.Allmeasureddeformationswerelessthanthepredictedvalues.Atvariousstagesofpressurization,concretecracksweremappedin'sixareasconsideredtobethemostsusceptibletocracking.Thelargestcrackfoundwas0.032inches.wideandthelargestchangeinacrack'swidthwas0.015inchesorless.Acomparisonofmeasureddeflectionanddeflectioncomputedfromstrainsshowsthatthestrain'agesweregenerallyaccu-rateuntilthesurroundingconcretecracked.Aftercracking,straindataindicatedmuchlargerdeflectionsthanweremeas-uredwithextensometersanddialgauges.However,eventhelargeststrainmeasured(940x106)indicatesareinforcingsteelstressoflessthan28ksi.Theresultsofthestructuralacceptancetestprovidedirectexperimentalevidencethatthecontainmentstructureiscap-ableofcontainingthedesignpressureswithasufficientmarginofsafety.

I 3~DESCRIPTIONOFCONTAINMENTSTRUCTUREThecontainment(seefigure3-1)isareinforcedconcretestructureconsistingofacylindricalsuppressionchamberbeneathaconicaldrywellchamber.Thetwochambersareseparatedbyaconcretediaphragmslabandthedrywelliscoveredwithanellipsoidalsteeldome.Theentireinteriorsurfaceofthecontainmentiscoveredwitha1/4inchthickweldedASTMA285GradeAsteellinerplatewhichservesasaleaktightmembrane.Themainreinforcementismadeupentirelyof418bars.Thereinforcementpatterninthediaphragmslabandbasematcon-sistsofhoopandradialbarsinthetopandbottomofeachslab.Thereinforcementpatternintheouterwallincludestwolayersofmeridionalbarsandonelayerofhoopsneartheinnersurfaceofthewallsandtwolayersofhoopbars,one1ayerofmeridionalbarsandtwolayersofdiagonalsneartheoutersurface.

4~TESTPIANANDPROCEDURESThecontainmentwaspressurizedto61.2psig(115%ofdesignpressureplustolerance)inbothchambersandto33.1psidifferentialpressure(115%ofdesigndifferential'lustol-erance)betweenchamberstodemonstratestructuralintegrity.Concretestrain,containmentdeformationandconcretesurfacecrackdevelopmentweremonitoredtoassessthestructuralresponseofthecontainmenttointernalpressureload.4.1TestPlanPressurizationThecontainmentwaspneumaticallypressurizedasshowninFigure4-1.Pressurizationratewaslimitedto3psi/hourtoallowreasonabledevelopmentofpotentialtimedependentconcreteresponsetotheimposedload.Depressurizationratewasnotlimited.Thedifferentialpressurewasattainedbyfirstreducingthepressureinbothchambersto28.1psigandsubsequentlyincreasingdrywellpressureto61.2psig.Thissequencepermittedclosercontrolofthemaximumdiffer-entialpressureacrossthediaphragmslab.Theventdow-comersandotherpipesconnectingthetwochamberswerecappedtoallowimpositionofthedifferentialpressure.ConcreteStrainStrainintheconcretewastransducedbyembeddedinstrumen-tationlocatedasshowninFigures4-2and4-3.Theembed-'eddevices-resistancestraingagesbondedtoNo.4rein-forcingbarsandCarlsonstrainmeters-werearrayedtomeasurecircumferentialandmeridionalcomponentsofstrainattheinnerandouterreinforcingcurtaingroups.Otherdeviceswerelocatedtomeasurethehelicalstraincomponentattheouterreinforcingcurtainandthediagonalcomponentofstrainnearthewallmid-planeinregionsofhightrans-verse.shear.Theembeddeddevicestransducedaveragecon-cretestrainoverrelativelyshortdistances(10inchesfortheCarlsonstrainmetersand18inchesplusbonddevelopmentlengthfortheNo.4barscomparedwith10'-9"developmentlengthfora018reinforcingbar-seeReferences3,section12.5and2,section2.5.2).Consequently,deviceresponseafterconcretecrackingwouldnotnecessarilyapproximatethatoftheprimaryreinforcingsteel.ContainmentDeformationTheradialandverticaldeformationsofthecontainmentweremeasuredusingtautwireextensometersanddialindicatorslocatedasshowninFigures4-4and4-5.Theremotelymoni-toredtautwireextensometerswerelocatedbothinsideandoutsideofthecontainment.Thevisuallymonitoreddialindi-catorswerelocatedonlyontheoutside.Radialdeformations

~gil ofthecontainmentwerereferencedtointernalandexternalstructureswhichwerenotexpectedtomoveinresponsetoeitherpressureorshorttermtemperaturechanges.Verticaldeformationsweremeasuredasrelativemovementbetweenthetopofcone,diaphragm'slabandbasemat.TheinstallationandoperationofthetautwireextensometersisillustratedschematicallyinFigure4-6.ConcreteSurfaceSurveillanceTheexteriorsurfaceoftheconcretewasexaminedforcrackdevelopmentinthe'reasshowninFigure4-7.Crackexamin-ationwasvisualusing7Xmagnifierstomeasurecrackwidth.Theexaminationareasweremarkedinonefootsquares(vary-ingsizecircularsegmentsontheequipmenthatcharea)bychalklinestofacilitatethoroughcoveragebyexaminationpersonnel.Concretecracksexceeding0.01inchesinwidthwerenotedandrecorded.OtherMeasurementsThefollowingadditionalparametersweremeasuredduringthetestusingtheequipmentandinstrumentationnoted.oDrywellandsuppressionchamberpressure-mechanicalbourdontubepressuregagesoDrywellandsuppressionchambertemperature-resistancetemperaturedetectors(RTD)locatedasshowninFigures4-4and4-5.oBarometricpressure-aneroidbarometeroOutdoorwetbulbanddrybulbtemperature(withanotationongeneralatmosphericconditions)-fluidcolumnthermom-eters,dialthermometerand100ohmcopperRTDoDateandtimeofday-digitalclockincorporatedintothedataacquisitionsystemdescribedbelow.DataAcuisitionConcretestrainandtautwireextensometerdatawererecordedusingascanningdigitaldataacquisitionsystem(DAS)witha3channelpersecondscanrate.Thesystemincorporatedadigitalclockwithday-hour-minuteresolutionandapapertape.printer.AcompleteDASrecordconsistedofaday-timeofdayheaderfollowedbyasequentiallistingofchannelnumbersandrawvoltagedata.Containmentpressure,dialindicatorreadings,barometricpressureandalltemperatureswererecordedmanually.TheRTDresistancesweremeasuredusingadigitalvolt-ohmmeter.Concretesurfaceexaminationdatawerealsorecordedmanually.

4.2TestProceduresDetailedtestproceduresarelistedintheAppendixandsum-marizedbelow.PretestPrearationsPriortothestartofpressurizationallmeasuringdeviceswereinstalledandoperationallychecked.Containmentclosureandothernecessaryconstructionactivities.werecompletedasrequiredbyanextensivepunchlist.ThesuppressionchamberwasfilledwithwatertoEl.672toprovidethedesignhydro-staticpressureloadingonthesuppressionchamberwall.InitialDataToassessthestabilityoftheinstrumentationinstalledtomeasurecontainmentresponse,concretestrainandtautwireextensometerdatawererecordedatthreehourintervalsfor.18hourspriortothestartofpressurization.Pressuriza-tionwascommencedwhenthepretestdatahadbeenevaluatedandtheinstrumentationdeterminedtobestable.TestMeasurementsStrainandtautwireextensometerdatawererecordedimmedi-atelypriortothestartofpressurization;atdrywellpres-sureincrementsanddecrementsof5psi;atthebeginningof,endofandonehourintervalsduringallconstantpressureholdperiodsanduponcompletionoffinaldepressurization.Containmentpressure,time,temperatureandbarometricpres-suredatawere'recordedatthesametimes.Concretesurfacesurveillanceareaswereexaminedpriortothestartofpres-surization,at30and61.2psigduringinitialpressuriza-tion,atmaximumdifferentialpressureandfollowingthecompletionoffinaldepressurization.Dialindicatorread-ingswererecordedatthesamepressurelevelsascrackdevelopmentdata.PostTestStabilitDataFollowingthecompletionoffinaldepressurization,strainandtautwireextensometerdatawererecordedatfourhourintervalsfor24and12hours,respectively,toassessthepostteststabilityoftheinstrumentation.IDataMonitorinDuringinitialpressurizationanddifferentialpressurizationselecteddatawerereducedtostrainsanddeformationsandevaluatedtoinsurethatthecontainmentwasrespondingtothepressur'eloadinanacceptablemanner.Followingthecomple-tionofdepressurization,alldatawerereviewedforsufficiencyandcredibility.

4.3CalibrationAllmeasuringdevicesexceptthemagnifiersusedforconcretesurfacecrackinspectionwerecalibratedonanindividualorlotbasis.Thetautwireextensometersensingunits,ther-mometers(exceptRTD's),dialindicators,Carlsonstrain'eters,barometer,pressuregagesanddigitalindicatorswereindividuallycalibratedusinginstrumentscertifiedtraceabletotheNationalBureauofStandards.ResistancestraingagesonNo.4reinforcingbarsand100ohmcopperRTD'swerelotcalibratedbythemanufacturers.4.4EstimatedAccuracyofMeasurementsThefollowingestimatesofmeasurementerrorarebasedoncalibrationdata,equipmentspecifications,computationofsmallerrorsnotcorrectedindatareduction,judgementcon-cerningreadingerrorsanddatastabilityrecords.Drywellandsuppressionchamberpressures-+0.2psigConcretestrain(elongati'onofsensor)-5%ofmeasuredstrain+20microstrainContainmentdeformation-4%ofmeasureddeformation+.OlinchesContainmenttemperature-+2'Concretecrackwidth-+.005inches

5.TESTRESULTSTheresultsofthestructuralacceptancetestprovidedirectexperimentalevidencethatthecontainmentstructurecancontainthedesign,internalpressurewithanamplemarginofsafety.Thetestdataconfirmthattheanalyticalmethodsandassumptionsusedtopredictthedeformationsduetopressurearevalidthoughveryconservative.Nolargecracksopenedduringthetestandaninspectionafterthetestre-vealednostructural'damage(thediaphragmslablinerplatewasdeformedlocally,aswillbediscussedlater,butthisdidnotendangertheintegrityofthestructure).5.1ContainmentStructureDeformationsRadialDeformationsmeasuredbytheradialextensometersareplottedinfigures5-1through5-5,Ineachfigurethelowerplotisoftestpressureversus.timeandtheupperplotshowstherangeofradialdeformationsduetothecorrespondingpressureshowninthelowerplot.Figures5-3and5-5showthedefor-mationcurvesofextensometersR-13andR-29respectivelyinadditiontotherangesofdefor'mationsobtainedfromtheotherextensometers.Fromthesefiguresitmaybeconcludedthatde-formationsmeasuredbyR-13andR-29werenotreliable.Figures5-6and5-7showtypicalradialextensometerreadingsandfigures5-8and5-9showradialdeformationvsazimuth.VerticalDeformationsmeasuredbytheverticalextensometersareplottedinfigures5-10through5-13.Again,theupperplotshowstherangeofdeformations.Infigures5-10through5-12however,therearetworangesshownintheupper.plot.Onerangeisforevennumberedgagesandtheotherrangeisforoddnumberedgages.Evennumberedgageswereanchoredtothedeckingunderthediaphragmslab.Oddnumberedgageswereanchoredtothebottomofwideflangebeams.Thetworangeswereshowntoil-lustratethedifferenceinbehavior.Infigure5-13thedefor-mationcurvesforextensometersV-22andV-23areshowninaddi-tiontotherangeoftheotherextensometers.Fromthiscurveitmaybeseenthatdeformationsmeasuredbythesetwodeviceswerenotaccurate.ExtensometerV-22measuredlargedeforma-tionsbecauseitwasanchoredtothesumplinerplatewhichwasdeformedduringthetest.V-23wasanchoredtothelinerplatewhereavoidexistedbeneaththeplate,thusaccountingforthelargedeformationsmeasuredbythatdevice.Figures5-14and5-15showtypicalverticalextensometermeasurements.EuimentHatchMeasuredandpredicteddeformationsaroundtheequipmenthatchforvariouspressuresaretabulatedinfigures5-16through5-18.Figures5-19through5-22comparethedeformations II measuredaboveandbelowthehatchwith"typical"deformations(i.e.deformationsawayfromthehatch).Figure5-23comparespredicteddeformationsoneithersideofthehatchwithmeasuredandtypicaldeformationsat61psig.5.2ContainmentStructureStrainsStrainsensingdeviceswereembeddedinthestructureatvariouslocationssothatstrainscouldbemonitoredduringthetest.Figures5-24through5-28showradialdeforma-tionscomputedfromhoopstrainsandarangeofradialdefor-mationsobtainedfromextensometersatapproximatelythesameelevations.Assumingtheextensometermeasurementstobeaccurate(seefigure5-40forcomparisonofextensometeranddialgagereadings)thestraingagesareseentobeaccurateuptoatleast30psig.After30psig,concretebeginscrackingandthestrainmeasurementsincreaserapidly.Justabovethediaphragmslabthedeformationscalculatedfromstraingagedataseemtobehighatlowtestpressuresandthentheyareaccurateatmaximumtestpressure.Thisapparentanomalyisduetothefactthatthedeformationsareextremelysmallthereandtheextensometersarenotaccurateenoughtoregisterthemreliably(seesection4.4).Typicalstraingagedataareplottedinfigures5-29through5-32.5.3ComparisonofTestResultswithPredictionsInfigures5-33and5-34curvesareplottedtoshowradialdeformationsobtainedfromthreesources.Onecurveshowsthepredictedradialdeformations,onecurveshowstheradialdeformationsmeasuredbyradialextensometersandonecurveshowstheradialdeformations.computedfrommeasuredhoopstrains.Figure5-33isfor30psigandfigure5-34isfor.61psig.Fromfigure5-33itmaybeseenthatdeformationscomputedfromhoopstrainscloselymatch.deformationsmeasuredbyradialextensometers.Infigure5-34thecurvefordeformationscomputedfromstrainreadingsdoesnotmatchthecurvefordeformationsmeasuredbyradialextensometersinthesuppressionpool.Thereasonthetwocurvesdonotmatchisthatfigure5-34isfor61psigandatthatpressuretheconcretehascrackedresultinginveryhighstrainmeasurements.Thecurveofdeformationsmeasuredbyextensometershowever,issimilarinshapetothecurveofpredicteddeformations.Thissim-ilarityindicatesthatthedesignmethodsandassumptionsusedwerevalidthoughveryconservative.Theconservatisminthesepredictionscamefromatleastfoursources:

lII 1)Themodulusofelasticityofconcretewasassumedtobe5x10psi.Theactualmodulusofelasticity,accordingtotestresultsmayhavebeenasmuchas7.5x10psi.2)Theconcretewasassumedtohaveatensilestrengthof200psi.Thetestresultsindicatethattheactualtensilestrengthwasabout450psi.'herefore,therewaslesscrackingthanpredicted.3)Inthedrywell,thepredictionsweremadeusingreinforcementratioswhichreflectedlessreinforcingsteelthanwasactuallyinstalled.4)Allcalculatedstrainsanddisplacements,whichwereconservativefortheabovethreereasons,wereincreasedby15%beforetheywerereported.Tocomparepredictedandmeasureddeformationsaroundtheequipmenthatch,seefigures5-16through5-23.Fromthesefiguresitmaybeseenthattheincreasesindeformationaroundthehatcharemuchlessthanpredicted.Thiswastobeexpectedhowever,sincethedeformationpredictionsaroundtheequipmenthatchwerebasedontheassumptionthattheconcretewascompletelycracked.Thepredictionswere,therefore,anupperbound.5.4MarginofSafetyThepredicteddeformations,iftheyhadoccurred,wouldhaveprod'ucedamaximumstressof25ksi,inthesuppressionpoolwall(exceptneartheequipmenthatchwherea45ksistresswaspredicted).Fromfigure5-34,itmaybeseenthattheactualdeformationsand,therefore,stressesexperiencedduringthetestwerefarless'hanpredictedthroughoutthestructure.Thecontainmentwouldbeginyieldingataninternalpressureofapproximately150psig.Therefore,themarginofsafetyagainst.yieldingat61psigis2.5.5.5BaseSlabDeflectionsThebaseslabdeflectionswerenotmeasureddirectly;however,straingageswereplacedintheslab(seefigure4.2forloca-tions)andthedeflectionswerecalculatedfromthedatafromthesegages.Thedeflectionswerecalculatedbytwomethodsandtheresultsofbothmethodsareshowninfigure5-35.Thetwocalculationmethodsaredescribedbelow.Bothmethodsarebasedonstrainsmeasuredat40psig(apressureatwhichverylittlecrackinghadoccurred)andtheresultsaremultipliedby61/40toobtaindeflectionsat61psig.RadialStrainMethodThebaseslabcurvaturewasdeterminedateachgroupofgagesbytherelation:
