TELEPHONE CALL FROM A REPORTER On March 27, 1989, Earl Lane, a reporter for Newsday, telephoned me. He had been referred to me by Keith Steyer, who he said had also referred him to an NRC lawyer. Apparently, there is consideration being given to the idea of dry cask, storage of spent fuel generated at Shoreh.agto facilitate decommissioning.

I kept my replies focused on spent fuel storage under 10 CFR Part 72, referring him to OGC, NRR, and Charles MacDonald, Chief, Transportation Branch.

I explained licensing under Part 72.

In response.to questions on a dual-purpose cask, I responded that Nuclear Assurance Corporation had indicated interest in applying for a certificate of compliance under Part 71 for a modification to a design submitted in a topical report. Earlier in the conversation, while explaining licensing under Part.72, I explained the place of topical reports as potential references in site _ specific license application safety analysis reports.

He thanked me when the conversation ended, indicating that he would be on this story frsr.some time to come and might call me again.
