Atlantic Sturgeon Question Date: Thursday, April 14, 2011 4:11:06 PM Hi Leslie -

Since I was not able to talk to you by phone yet, I thought I would send you the following information about Atlantic sturgeon at the Salem site.

  • On March 21, 2011, a dead shortnose sturgeon was found the trash bars at the Salem intake structure. NMFS was notified by phone of this event. During the call, the PSEG representative also mentioned to the NMFS, as a courtesy since reporting of a species proposed for listing is not required, that a dead Atlantic sturgeon had been found on the Salem intake structure trash bars a few days earlier (on March 18, 2011).
  • A written notification about the dead shortnose sturgeon will be submitted to NMFS within 30-days after March 21, 2011, as required by the Salem Incidental Take Statement.

PSEG notes that live sturgeon are rarely found on the Salem intake structure trash racks, and those that are found alive are typically sick or injured because healthy fish are able to escape the intake flows without problem.

Please let me know if there are additional questions.

Thanks.
