3/16/10 To: Chief, rulemaking and Directives Branch Division of Administrative Services U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington D.C. 20555-0001 I salute PSEG for their plan to produce Cobalt-60 which can be used to promote and maintain our health.
It is interesting that Cobalt-60 was involved in an accidental but very important experiment in Taiwan. Cobalt-60 was accidentally mixed with steel which was made into reinforcing rods used in constructing apartments. The mistake was discovered 15 years later, and it was found that apartment
- occupants had.,received radiation doses averaging 7400 millirems per year. This is 20 times the average dose of 350 millirems per year that Americans receive.
A survey of about 10,000 apartment occupants-showed a cancer rate of only 3% of the rate for those who receive an average radiation dOse. This means that concerns about low level radiation are comfpletely-unjustified.
The medical use of Cobalt-60 and other nuclear power by-products is a bonus for us, over and above the use of nuclear power.
I have no pecuniary'inter6st in any company involved in nuclear power.
