TOLEDO EDISON COMPANY DAVIS-BESSE NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT ONE SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FOR LER NP-33-79-58 DATE OF EVENT: May 3, 1979 FACILITY: Davis-Besse Unit 1 IDENTIFICATION OF OCCURRENCE: Failure of the IBM System 7 Security / Fire / Radiation Computer Conditions Prior to Occurrence: The unit was in Mode 5, with Power (MWT) = 0, and Load (Gross MWE) = 0.

Description of Occurrence: On May 3,1979, at approximately 1830 hours0.0212 days
0.508 hours
0.00303 weeks
6.96315e-4 months
, the IBM System 7 Contact Data Logger failed, thus rendering the fire and radiation remote monitoring inoperable. This placed the unit in the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.3.3.8 which requires an hourly fire patrol be established.

The Shif t Foreman declared the System 7 Computer inoperable, notified station security to furnish guards, and established a fire patrol to check all fire detection cabinets hourly.

Designation of Apparent Cause of Occurrence: The cause of the fdilure is an inter-mittent equipment problem which has not yet been determined by the station personnel involved or by the IBM service representative.

Analysis of Occurrence: There was no danger to the health and safety of the public or to station personnel. A fire patrol was established and guards posted on vital doors.

Corrective Action: On May 3, 1979, at approximately 2220 hours0.0257 days
0.617 hours
0.00367 weeks
8.4471e-4 months
, the computer pro-gram was reloaded. The system was placed back in operation, removing the unit from the Action Statement of Technical Specification 3.3.3.8. The System 7 is being phased out.

Failure Data: This is a repetitive occurrence. There have been three previously reported failures of the System 7 Computer; see Licensee Event Reports NP-33-79-11, NP-33-7C-30, and NP-33-79-46.
