BRAIDWOOD STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 - CLOSURE OF CONFIRMATORY ACTION LETTER (CAL) NRR-07-008 (TAC NO. MD7295)

Dear Mr. Hanson:

On March 22, 2007, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) issued Confirmatory Action Letter (CAL) No. NRR-07-008 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML070740294) regarding dissimilar metal welds in the pressurizer at Braidwood Station (Braidwood), Units 1 and 2. This letter acknowledges receipt of your letter dated July 10, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No. ML081920287), informing the NRC staff of actions taken in response to this CAL.

In your letter, you stated that actions and commitments related to CAL NRR-07-008 have been completed for Braidwood, Unit 2, and confirmed actions previously reported by letter dated May 19, 2008 (ADAMS Accession No. ML081400792), regarding the application of structural weld overlays to the pressurizer spray, relief, safety and surge nozzle safe ends for Braidwood, Unit 2, including satisfactory non-destructive examination results. Based on your letters, the NRC staff has found that all the commitments listed in the CAL and supporting commitment letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML070520499) have been met for Braidwood, Unit 2. As such, it is no longer necessary to implement enhanced inspection and leakage monitoring requirements for the reactor coolant system at Braidwood, Unit 2. Technical Assignment Control (TAC)

No. MD7295 has been closed.

Further, by letter dated December 17, 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML073390179), the NRC staff acknowledged the completion of the applicable confirmatory action items for Braidwood, Unit 1. Therefore, no further response is required regarding the CAL. We consider the CAL closed for both Braidwood units.

Thank you for informing us of the actions documented in your letter. These actions may be examined during a future NRC inspection of your facility.
