G. L. Johnson (Greg) Site Engineering Director Plant Edwin I. Hatch 1 1028 Hatch Parkway North Baxley, GA 31 51 3 Tel. 912.537.5874 September 3,2008 \ SOUTHERN li COMPANY Phillip K. Niebaum NRC Resident Inspector Nuclear Regulatory Commission Plant Edwin I. Hatch Baxley, GA 3 15 13

Dear Mr. Niebaum:

It is my understanding that you wish to use three photographs of the failed coupling for the swing diesel generator and one of the replacement coupling in the NRC inspection report soon to be issued that resulted from the recent special NRC inspection that was conducted. It is also my understanding that the attached pictures were taken by the resident inspector during the course of Plant Hatch's troubleshooting/repair efforts associated with the degraded coupling for the swing diesel generator.

I have confirmed that these are pictures of the Hatch swing diesel generator degraded and replacement couplings.

You have permission to use these pictures for the purpose of adding value to the special inspection report and to provide needed perspective in understanding the technical issues involved.
