No: III-15-017 June 9, 2015 CONTACT: Viktoria Mitlyng 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil 630-829-9663 NRC Schedules Open House June 18 to Discuss Performance of Fermi Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials will hold an open house June 18 to discuss the agencys assessment of the Fermi Power Plants performance during 2014. The plant is located in Newport, Mich., about 55 miles northeast of Toledo, Ohio, and is operated by DTE Electric Company.

The open house is scheduled for 6 to 7 p.m. EDT at the Monroe County Courthouse Board of Commissioners Chambers, 125 E. Second St., in Monroe, Mich. The NRC staff will be available for informal one-on-one discussions about the performance of the Fermi plant and other topics related to the NRCs regulatory activities.

These open houses give the public a chance to talk informally with our staff about the plant and other NRC-related issues, said NRC Region III Administrator Cynthia D. Pederson. It is a great opportunity for people to meet our resident inspectors and other staff; and a great opportunity for us to interact with people who live near the plant.

The NRC concluded that Fermi operated safely last year.

NRC inspectors identified one or more greater-than-green findings in the security area in the first quarter of 2014. As a result, the plant received an increased level of inspection and oversight throughout 2014. NRC inspectors made sure the plant immediately addressed potential vulnerabilities.

After conducting a follow-up inspection in the last quarter of 2014, NRC determined that the plant has resolved the issues and returned the plant to the regular level of NRC oversight.

This year, Fermi will continue to receive the detailed routine inspections conducted at all nuclear power plants. Routine inspections are performed by two NRC Resident Inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the Region III Office in Lisle, Ill., and the agencys headquarters in Rockville, Md. Some of the areas to be inspected this year are license renewal, problem identification and resolution, and radiation protection.

The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess nuclear plant performance. The colors start with green and then increase to white, yellow, or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Performance indicators are statistical measurements of plant and equipment performance.
