Viktoria Mitlyng, 630-829-9662 Prema Chandrathil, 630-829-9663 NRC to Hold Virtual Meeting to Discuss 2020 Performance of Fermi Nuclear Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2020 safety performance of the Fermi nuclear power plant during a virtual meeting to be held June 24.

Fermi, located in Newport, Michigan, is operated by DTE Electric Company.

The session will begin at 6 p.m. Eastern time. The public must call in at 1-888-677-1820, passcode 5601803#, to hear the presentation and to participate during the open portion of the meeting. The visual portion of the meeting will be held online; please review the meeting notice for participation instructions.

NRC staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight will participate in the meeting, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site.

Fermi operated safely in 2020. At the end of the year, all inspection findings and performance indicators were of very low safety significance, or green. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Inspections at Fermi are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and specialist inspectors from the Region III Office in Lisle, Illinois.

The annual assessment letter for Fermi is available on the NRC website. The current performance information is also available and is updated quarterly.
