No: 21-050 November 18, 2021 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Approves Power Uprate for Millstone Power Station, Unit 3 The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a request by Dominion Energy Nuclear Connecticut to increase the reactor capacity of Millstone Power Station, Unit 3, by approximately 1.6 percent.

The NRC staff determined that Dominion could safely increase the reactors heat output, primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow.

The power uprate for Unit 3, located approximately 3 miles southwest of New London, Connecticut, will increase the units generating capacity by approximately 20 megawatts electric.

Dominion intends to implement the uprate by spring 2022. The NRCs safety evaluation of the plants proposed power uprate focused on several areas, including the nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, fire protection, operations and training, testing, and technical specification changes.

The NRC published a Federal Register notice regarding the Millstone Unit 3 power uprate application in April, providing the public an opportunity to comment or request a hearing. The agencys safety evaluation of the Millstone Unit 3 power uprate is available through the NRCs ADAMS electronic document database.
