No: I-22-004 March 18, 2022 CONTACT: Diane Screnci, 610-337-5330 Neil Sheehan, 610-337-5331 NRC to Meet with Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council to Discuss Millstone Nuclear Power Plant 2021 Performance Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2021 safety performance of the Millstone nuclear power plant during a virtual meeting with the Connecticut Nuclear Energy Advisory Council on March 24. The plant, operated by Dominion Nuclear, is located in Waterford, Connecticut.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m., Eastern time, with a presentation by the NRC staff.

Following a discussion with NEAC, NRC staff responsible for plant inspections, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the site, will be available to answer questions from the public.

The meeting can be accessed by the public and media via a Zoom link set up by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The webinar meeting number is:

941 6465 5678.

NEAC was formed by the state to discuss issues related to the safety and operations of nuclear power plants in Connecticut and to advise state officials on these topics. Part of its mandate is to review the status of those plants with the NRC.

Millstone Units 2 and 3 operated safely during 2021. At the end of the year, all inspection findings and performance indicators were green, or of very low safety significance. As a result, both units remain under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Inspections are performed by three NRC resident inspectors and specialist inspectors from the Region I office in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
