No: 17-040 September 7, 2017 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Announces Hearing Opportunity for River Bend License Renewal; To Hold Public Meeting to Discuss Environmental Review The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has announced the opportunity to request a hearing on an application to renew the operating license of the River Bend nuclear power plant in St. Francisville, La.

The agencys environmental review of the license renewal application will include a public meeting to be held near the plant on Sept. 19, 2017.

River Bend Station, Unit 1, about 24 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, is a boiling-water reactor currently licensed to operate through Aug. 29, 2025. The operator, Entergy Operations Inc., submitted an application on May 31, 2017, to extend the license for an additional 20 years. The NRC staff has determined the application contains sufficient information to formally docket the application and begin its safety and environmental reviews. Docketing the application does not preclude requesting additional information as the reviews proceed, and it does not indicate whether the NRC will renew the license.

The meeting on the environmental review will run from 7-9 p.m., at the St. Francisville Town Hall Meeting Room at 11936 Ferdinand Street, in St. Francisville.

The public meeting is but one method for filing public comments on the environmental review before the October deadline. Comments can also be submitted via regulations.gov under Docket ID NRC-2017-0141, or via mail (using Docket ID NRC-2017-0141) to Cindy Bladey, Office of Administration, Mail Stop OWFN-12 H08, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001. A Federal Register notice, expected soon, will repeat the instructions for submitting comments.

The NRC announced the hearing request opportunity in the Federal Register. The hearing opportunity notice includes instructions for filing petitions to intervene. The deadline for filing hearing petitions is Oct. 13, 2017.

The River Bend license renewal application is available on the NRC website, and at the West Feliciana Parish Library, 5114 Burnett Road in St. Francisville.
