MINOR TRANSPORTATION ACCIDENT INVOLVING LOW ENRICHED URANIUM FUEL At 9:00 am PST on January 20, 1993, the licensee notified the Region V office of a minor transportation accident involving an export shipment of low- enriched (about 3. 5 percent U-235) uranium fuel pellets. The accid:nt occurred at 7:00 am PST about five miles cast of Des Moines, Iowa on Interstate 80. The open " exclusive use" tractor / trailer was transporting 48 NRC certified shipping containers (ANF-250) loaded with about 100 kilograms of low-enriched uranium fuel pellets when it slid on black-ice into a tractor / trailer vehicle carrier that had previously slid into a nearby ditch. On impact, three of the shipping containers (outer package) were slightly creased (about 6 inches long and 1/4 inch deep).

i The licensee reported that package integrity was not breached. Based on a l discussion with the truck driver's main office regarding the accident, the licensee concluded that there was no damage to the inner containers housing the uranium fuel pellets. There were no personnel injuries and the local authorities were notified by the truck driver.

At about 8:30 am the accident scene was cleared and the tractor / trailer with the fuel shipment was held up at the truck stop due to the highways being closed because of weather conditions. The shipment of fuel will be returned to Siemens Power Corporation in Richland, Washington, 1

l The Region V Office notified the Region III office and the State of Iowa.
