[External_Sender] Docket ID NRC-2022-0183, request for extension of license for Comanche Peak, comment for environmental scoping Date: Tuesday, January 17, 2023 4:17:10 PM I presume that the reactors at Comanche Peak were built with safety margins considered adequate when they were designed, but we know that internal components deteriorate when the reactors are operating.

Extending their operating licenses would give up some of the safety margin the original designers incorporated. We should be concerned about the potential for these reactors to leak tritium into nearby waters. In addition, it is likely that the region will be subject to one or more severe droughts during the license extension period. This would put additional pressure on water requirements both for the operation of the Comanche Peak plant, and for neighbors who rely on the same water. Given the lower costs and lower environmental and health risks of renewable energy sources, and given the likelihood of severe drought during the proposed license extension, I think the proposed extension is unwarranted. Please make sure to address these issues carefully during your review.
