SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF JUNE 16, 2021, PUBLIC MEETING TO DISCUSS A PROPOSED INCREASE IN THE ENRICHMENT LIMIT FOR LOUISIANA ENERGY SERVICES On June 16, 2021, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff held a public observation meeting with URENCO, doing business as Louisiana Energy Services (LES), to discuss a proposed increase in its enrichment limit.
The purpose of the meeting was to have pre-application discussions regarding a license amendment which would authorize enrichment of uranium up to 10 percent. NRC staff asked if LES planned to continue producing uranium enriched to 5 percent while producing higher enrichments. LES said yes, it planned to maintain the flexibility to produce uranium enriched to the level requested by its customers. When asked about tails, LES stated that assays may vary, but it expected no significant change in the amount of tails produced. In response to questions about product cylinders and segregation, LES stated that it could not answer those questions at this time. LES stated it plans to submit several licensing actions between 2021 and 2024 to support the increase in enrichment, which will focus primarily on updates to criticality safety and the integrated safety analysis A copy of the slides presented at the meeting and a list of participants is enclosed.
