OF MAY 15, 2024, HYBRID PARTIALLY CLOSED PRE-APPLICATION MEETING WITH URENCO USA REGARDING LICENSE AMENDMENT REQUEST 24-01 FOR APPROVAL TO USE EXISTING RECYCLING AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS TO PROCESS LOW ENRICHED URANIUM PLUS On May 15, 2024, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff held a hybrid partially closed pre-application meeting with Urenco USA (UUSA) to discuss forthcoming license amendment request 24-01 (LAR 24-01). LAR 24-01 will seek NRC approval to process uranium 235 (U-235) enriched up to 10 weight percent (aka low-enriched uranium plus) in the existing UUSA component recycling and support systems and the removal of existing controls for those systems (the systems are licensed at a lower enrichment).
UUSA informed the NRC staff that they are seeking to submit the application in the second quarter of calendar year 2024. They also provided an overview of the structure, scope, and planned contents of the LAR.
