SUMMARY

OF INTERVIEW I contacted Mr. Paul Schutt, President, Nuclear Assurance Corporation (NAC), in Atlanta by telephone (404-325-4200) on April IC, 1900. After I identified myself and explained the purpose of my call, Hr. Schutt provided the following information.

Hr. Schutt stated that NAC had transported radioactive materials to Chem-Nuclear's Barnwell site using a spent fuel shipping cask (designated NAC-1) which has a wire cage over the cask during transit. lie stated that he believed the shipments were from the Oyt.ter Creek Nuclear Plant and occurred in 1978. He said he would check the records and call me back. Mr. Schutt stated during this conversation that NAC had never transported spent fuel to the Barnwell site.

Mr. Schutt called back en April 11, 1980, and stated that the NAC-1 cask was used for 24 shipments to Chem-Nuclear in Barnwell. Eighteen shipments, occurring between December 30, 1976, and March 2, 1977, consisted of fuel channel boxes (the non-fuel-bearing, outer covering of a fuel assembly) and instrument assemblies from Oyster Creek. The remaining six shipments, conducted in August - September 1978, consisted of burnable poison rods from the Crystal River Nuclear Plant. Mr. Schutt St,ated that NAC had not made any other shipments into Barnwell using the NAC-1 cask.
