From: James A. Sloan, R.IV To: rxw Russell Wise, R-IV Date: 2/7/96 7:24pm subject Kittens -Reply This is an update to the previous message:

The kittens' activity levels (total for 4 kittens combined) were:

2/3 (day 1) 4 microcuries (not nanocuries) 2/4 3.6 uCi 2/5 3.3 uCi 2/7 2.3 uCi This is consistent with a 7-day biological half-life.

The licensee has consulted with UC Davis and, based on human data, some fraction of the cesium is expected to remain in the bone structure. For-humans the fraction is around 10%. Based on the above, the licensee has projected that the kittens would be below the levels used to release other items (tools, etc.) in abut 70 days, unless the fraction retained in the bones created a ' knee" in the curve such that it becomes more predominant that the rest of the activity, at a point above the releasable limit. The licensee is reassessing as data is gathered.

The licensee is performing bioassays of the urine every 2 days or so, and will assay the feces when the kittens begin to excrete. Additionally, the licensee plans to count the activity in a GELI counter weekly.

The small amount of Co-60, which was detected in a whole body counter on February 1, 1996, is thought to be external only, and is expected to eventually be removed. Co-60 is insoluble in huraan body fluids.

The licensee does not believe the kittens were ever in the radiologically controlled areas, but got the contamination from the mother cat. The external contamination is thought to have principally come from the kittens sitting in their own urine.
