I. INTRODUCTION The confirmation of the' design verification of Unit 1 & 2 Cable Tray-Hanger (CTH) System at Comanche Peak Steam Electric Station (CPSES) includes an extensive dynamic testing of full-scale cable tray V system representing an actual cable tray-hanger system configuration, namely Configuration No. 7. The test was performed by ANCO Engineers, Inc. (Ref. 1). The same configuration was also dynamically and-statically analyzed by Ebasco using PD STRUDL computer program in the l post-test analyses, except that in the Ebasco analyses no connectivity between hangers and trays due to friction was utilized. The results of the test and the analyses were tabulated for comparison in this report. The purpose of this report is to confirm and demonstrate that the cable tray hanger designed by analysis is conservative. L v i b 4 L 1

'II.- DYNAMIC TESTS The tests for Configuration 7 were performed at ANCO Engineer, Inc.- The test set up and procedure were described in ANCO's Final Summary Report-[Ref. 1]. The isometric sketch and the hanger details, which serve as test specimens, for the test Configuration 7 are shown on Figures 1, 2 and 3. Dynamic tests consist of random white-noise input, sinusoidal dwell base and seismic excitations. The purpqsa of each test is described as follows: 1 Ihe randon white-noise input test was to detect the system frequencies; the sinusoidal dwell test at single frequency was to verify the modal frequencies which were obtained from randon base testing. The seismic test was to investigate the seismic behavior of the test specimen and the unbroadened envelope response spectra, provided in Attachment 1 of Ebasco Project Identification No. SAG CP5 [Ref 2), was used as an input notion. A random multiple frequency wave form was used to simulate the earthquake action and was supplied simultaneously in three othorgonal directions. l The response spectra from the seismic test were recorded and documented in Appendix G of ANCO's Final Summary Report [Ref. 1). l .III.- POST-TEST ANALYSES The post-test analyses of Test Configuration 7 were performed using two 4 different approaches. The first approach used equivalent static method l (ESH) analysis. In this approach the tray masses were lumped at the ' tray and hanger connections and the analysis was~ performed statically for each hanger individually. The'second approach used response spectra method (RSM). The RSM l simulates the system behavior of cable tray and supports using a three dimension finite element model and calculate the responses from the response spectra. These two methods are described in more details below: A. Equivalent Static Method (ESH) j The ESM analysis treated each hanger as an independent structure. The tray masses were lumped to the individual hanger. The cable i tray loading on each support was calculated based on the actual span as shown on Fig. 1 and unit weight per foot of tray. The supports #3, 4 and 5 are in violation of Appendix 4 of CTH Design I Criteria [Ref. 3]'therefore, an additional loading from tray reaction was calculated in accordance with Attachment Y of " General j Instructions for Cable Tray Hanger Analysis" [Ref. 3] and added to { the inertia loading for hanger 3, 4 and 5. The calculation of tray l loads on i.ach hanger is presented in Appendix C, Calculation No. 1. For transverse hangers, no connectivity due to friction in the [ longitudinal direction between hangers and trays was considered. Frequency analyses were performed to obtain the fundamental frequencies of cable tray [ Refer to Appendix C, Calculation No. 2] and individual hanger for each of three (3) orthogonal directions. The Dunkley's formula was used to combine the frequencies of cable tray and hanger. The static analysis was performed on each hanger 4 separately and marious stresses, displacements and support. reactions were calculated using SRSS sethod to combine the t 4 simultaneous effect of three earthquake directions. The required seismic input "g" values used in the analysis were obtained by 1.25 (Multimode Response Multiplier - MRN) times spectral "g" values from tabulated "g" vs frequencies tables (digitized response spectra) which represent the OBE and SSE response spectra curves from Test Configuration 7. These tables are listed in Appendix B.

Response Spectra Method (RSM) ) j A response spectra analysis was performed on a 3-D finite element { model representing Test Configuration 7. The CTH system model and individual hanger model are illustrated in Figures 3 through 9. No connectivity due to friction between transverse hangers and trays in the longitudinal direction was considered. / i k I : 1746R

The cig =v st:ra vers alco 3:nersted. l The RSM analysis used the Response Spectra Curves with 4% damping of OBE and 7% damping of SSE which are provided by ANCO from the -,-h results of the tests. These response spectra are given in Ref. 1. V The digitized response spectra, corresponding to the curves from the test, which were used'as numerical input in the analyses were provided in Appendix 5. To account for the missing mass effect, the reasinder of total -modal mass was multiplied by the largest spectral acceleration at or beyond cut-off frequency and applied as a rigid body force on the CTH structure. This process is delineated in details in PD-STRUDL Manual [Ref. 6) as " Missing Mass Correction". Seismic responses were obtained directly from these analyses using modal superposition as described in NRC Reg. Guide 1.92. C. Analysis Results For the purpose of comparison between measured and calculated results the following data were tabulated for ESM and RSM. 1. Manger Displacements Displacements at each hanger and tray connecting point were tabulated in Tables 1 through 7 of Appendix A. [. 2. Response Spectra Analysis j A response spectra analysis of the cable tray and hanger system for j Test Configuration 7 was performed using the input response spectra j irom the test. H e cable trays were modeled as single lines of besa elements located at their centroids. 2he hangers were modeled j into the system by using basa elements to represent the structural members. j In order to find a system with approximately the same 1 characteristics as the test, the support stiffnesses were varied until the mode shapes from the analysis matched closely with the 4 test. This was done in Response Spectra Analysis of Configuration j 7 (STRUDL Run No. J3394A dated 02/13/87). In this analysis, it was j assumed that no connectivity in the tray longitudinal direction due to friction existed between the transverse hangers (S2 to S5) and l trays. The comparison of the system frequencies and mode shapes i between this analysis and the test is given in Table 88. The l seismic displacements from this analysis were compared with the test in Table 1* for OBE and Table 28 for SSE. In all cases, the j analysis gave more conservative results. i

V. CONCLUSION Based on the comparison of the analytical results with the test e results, the following conclusions can be madet (\\ 1. The equvalent static method (ESN) used in Ebasco cable tray hanger design verification is conservative compared to the test. [ 2. The systes modeling technique used in Ebasco response spectra method (RSM) analysis closely reflects the test system behavior provided that the proper spring rates for the support stiffnesses are used. 3. Ebasco RSM analytical approach as used in the, cable tray hanger design verification is conservative compared to the test.
