Problem: SIGNIFICANTJiATERIAL UNACCOUNTED FOR (MUF) QUANTITY .

On February 974, Region III was notified by Kerr-McGee by telephone that the Februa monthly plutonium physical inventory indicates a MUF loss

, quantity of 1.5 lograms Pu with limits of error o 8.4 ilograms Pu.

(The limits of error quantity exceeds the technical

• specification of

'1 5 kilograms Pu ) The MUF quantity is significant ,because (1) it exceeds

, . the associated limits of error, and (2) the January 1974 inventory MUF quantity was also a loss 6.5 lograms Pu). Investigation.by the licensee, has failed to reveal exact causes of the significant MUF quantity.

In a telephone conversation,' being confirmed in writing,by Region III.,

the licensee is taking the following actions: -

1. Fabrication of fuel has been stopped and a new inventory is being conducted,- inventory started on March 1, 1974. -
