SUBJECT:
Reinspection of Unit 2 Hydraulic Shock Suppressors at Quad-Cities Nucicar Power Station
Dear Mr. Kopplcr:
In accordance with Regulatory Operations Bulletin #73 4, a re-inspection van conducted recently on Unit 2 to determine the condition of Bergen-Patterson Hydraulic chock absorbers installed in cafety related systems.
As reported previously, 20 of theco 29 cnubberc had been repaired during the initial incpection in Au gu s t.,The reinspection vac conducted during the unit outage from October
- 17,1973 through October 22, 1973 All the shock absorberc were incpected in place prior to re-moval.
Throc.cnubbers vero found empty of fluid and five others choved cigns of Icakage.
Thecc failures are summarized in the following table.

The eight snubbers which failed on Unit 2 have not yet been dicascombled for a detailed inspection. We-do not have a sufficient supply of spare parto to complete their reasacably l and therefore vc believe it vould not be vise to tear down the anubbers at this time. We have no reason to belicyc that the resulta of thic closer inspection vill be any different from the findings on Unit 1. We fully expect that numbers 2-13, 2-16, 2 18, 2-22 and 2-25 have failed due to deterioration j of the millabic gum polyurethane o-rings installed in these 1 original units. In the others we expect to find that the o-rings became hard and took a definite set thus preventing l them from performing their scaling function. In cummary, all of the Bergen-Patterson hydraulic chock eb-corborn inctalled in both unito now contain molded polyure-3 thanc scalc and ethylene propylenc o-rings. Some snubbers installed on Unit 1 contain molded polyurethanc ( free of ad-ditives) o-ringo. Future inspections and corrective action vill b'c in accordance with requirements cet forth by the 2 Directorate of Licensing in D. J.
