SUBJECT:

Inspection of Berren-Patterson shock suppressors

_ at Quad-Cities :iuclear Power Station Unit 2, AEC Dkt 50-205 Reference :

Letter from Mr. D. J. Skovholt to Mr. J. S. Abel dated October 1, 1973

Dear Mr. O' Leary:

This letter is to report the station's first inspection of Bergen-Paterson hydraulic shock suppressors on Unit 2 since the reinspection conducted in October 1973 and reported in my letter dated October 26, 1973 The unit was shutdown on January 25 to perform scheduled maintenance and to inspect all hydraulic shock suppressors.

The inspection revealed that all 29 Bergen-Patterson snubbers on Unit 2 were operable and exhibited overall good integrity.

The 4 Parker Hannafin snubbers in the Unit 2 drywell were also oper e'-le and had good overall integrity.

The 14 Grinnell snubbers common to Units 1 and 2 were pre-viously inspected on January 2 when Unit 1 was down and since they were all found in good condition and it was less than 30 days since the previous inspection they were not re-inspected.

Of the remaining 16 Grinnell snubbers two wei? found to have empty oil reservoirs and two with oil love.s less than 50%.

The attached list provides more detailed information on these 4 snubbers.

The remaining 12 Grinnell snubbers unique to Unit 2 were found with no oil leaks and in good general condition.

The two snubbers with empty reservoirs were inspected closely but no obvious defects were found.

Mr. ' J. F. O ' Le ary January 29, 1974 refilled and all fittings were tightened prior to startup and no leaks were observed at that time.

Snubber no. 4857 can be inspected regularly because it is not in a high radiation area.

Snubbers 71695, 4750 and 4753 are in high radiation areas during normal operations.

All four of these devices will be inspected on a monthly basis in addition to the normal requirements until con-fidence in their integrity is obtained.
