, -i WT (Waste Treatment) Pond OH 04/04/90 0 1400 a WT pond sludge sample detected I-131.

wookly WT offluent samples did not. reveal any I-131 activity. Since no other A review of'the- ji nuclides were detected, an investigation into the source.was initiated.

It was' revealed that a contract canteen service's worker from 4-C's (Barry Hinson) had ingested a medical dose of I-131. 'A body burden analysis was performed on Mr. Hinson and I-131 activity-was detected. Mr. Hinson continued j to use the restrooms 'at McGuire as usual, and all restrooms at McGuire discharge to the NT pond for treatment. Since no other nuclides werc detected, other than 1 I-131, the. Hinson is the most probable source of the WT pond activity. . '

i Since the sourc'o of I-131 activity was due to a medical exposure and not a product of McGuire, the activity will not be accounted for in the McGuire effluent totals.

McGuire Nuclear Station WGDT "E" Leak On 02/16/90 On 02/16/90 at = 1210, WGDT "E" had a slight leak of = 6 psi over a period of thirteen (13) hours. The count rato on 1 EMF 36(L) went'from a background reading -

of = 40 cpm to = 80 cpm during the release. This slightly increase in gaseous activity released did not exceed any Tech. Spec, limits. ~

The activity released during this event was accounted for at the first of. March when the procedure, Hp/0/B/1003/01, Unit-Vent Calculations, was performed.

This memo will be placed in the semi-annual effluent report for 01/01/90 to 06/30/90.

McGuire Nuclear Station Wasto Gas Release Through the Unit 1 Vent On 06/26/90'at approximately 2130, Chemistry activities while manipulating a wasto gas compressor resulted in an inadvertent release of noble gases.vinithe Unit 1 vent.' i The releaso occurred over a thirty (30) minuto period and resulted in-a total release of 0.715 ci of noblo gas. This release did not excoed any Tech. Spec.  ;

MPC calculations are based on the actual 1 EMF 36(L) readings during the release period. Tho X/Q valoo used is the highest average X/Q from McGuire Offsite Doso Calculation annual (ODCM).

Land Use Census ,

Technical Specification (3/4.12.2 " Land Use Census") requires the land use census to be completed annually. Tech.-Spec. 3.12.2 states that within a 5 mile radius and in each of the 16 meteorological sectors the nearest-milk animal,-the nearest residence and the nearest garden be identified.

Technical Specification 3.12.2(a&b) require a comparison of the milk animal (s),

and garden's potential dose to the dose calculated at the current Radiological Environmental Monitoring Sample (REMP) Locations. If the dose of the census ,

identified location is 20% greater than the current sampling location, reporting- l la required. Technical Specification 3.12.2b provides guidance for reporting.  !

i Dose calculations were performed on locations identified by land use census.

Many of these calculations indicated a 20% or greater difference between Land Use Census Location and REMP Locations for milk animals and gardens.  ;

The owner's of the milk animals and gardens identified in the 1990 Land Use Census were interviewed by the Applied Science Center personnel to see if the milk is used for human consumption, and if the gardens are irrigated, and if the owners are willing to participate in the Radiological Environmental Sampling Program (RFMP). One of the irrigated garden owners is interested in participating as shown on Attachment 1. Attachments 1 & 2 give explanations why the rest of the locations will not be added to REMP. All current REMP j Sampling Locations will continue to be sampled. '

There are several milk animals and irrigated gardens located i in sectors with high D/Q's that were not used to collect j samples for the 1990 Radiological Environmental Monitoring

. Program (REMP). All'the respective owners at these locations  ;

have been questioned to determine if.they were interested in in providing Duke Power Company samples for McGuire's REMP.

Below are the results of this survey, ,

Goat - 1.8 miles E - The milk produced at Eddie Thornburg's

Cow - 1.5' miles SE - Jim Carmichael'is unwilling to participate.

Cow - 3.3 miles S - The~ cows in this sector belong to David Kidd and are not milked for' human consumption. However, i he does have cows on his farm in the SSE sectorLwhich we -I obtain samples from.

Trrigated - 2.5 miles N11E - James Harrelson has La small garden j Garden which he feels only provides'enough-for his  !

family. He was not interested in participating.

Irrigated - 4 miles NE -

John Beard was not interested in l Garden participating in the program.

Irrigated - 2 miles NW - Mr. Nixon at Nixon Farms was not Garden growing strawberries this year, nor wasEhe j interested in participating in the past.

5 Irrigated - 3.5 miles NNW - Mr. Lanier was not interested in Garden participating in-the program.

A new irrigated garden was found during this census. It is

i located 4.9 miles North. The garden is owned by Elbert Brewer at Rt 6, Box 84-H, Mooresville, N.C. on.. State road s 2160. Sampling at.this location will begin in August, 1990. .
