S Gentlemen:
3 DOCKET NOS. 50266 AND 50301 FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2 Your May 4,1981 letter denied our request for exemption to 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix R, Section III.H. which was submitted with our March 18, 1981 letter.
Tne subject request for exemption would have allowed the shift super-visor to act as the fire brigade leader.
Although we disagree with your denial of our request for exemption, the duty operating supervisor has been designated to be the fire brigade leader.
Thereby, the Point Beach Nuclear Plant fire brigade satisfies the requirements of 10 CFR Part 50 Appendix R, Section III.H.
Your letter also states that our proposed modification for item 3.2.2 does not meet the requirements of Section III.G. of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50.
Therefore, we will revise the circulating water pumphouse modification to include a wet pipe automatic sprinkler system over the safety related pump area and we will provide fire detection and a fire-rated barrier to divide the service water pumps into two groups of three each and separate one group of three service water pumps from the diesel-driven fire pump as requested in to your letter.
Thereby, the circulating water pumphouse fire protection will satisfy the requirements of Section III.G. of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50.
The requested exemptions from certain schedule requirements of paragraph (c) of 10 CFR Part 50.48 were submitted with our March 18 letter to provide sufficient time for our completion of the detailed plant evaluation which the Commission requires.
These requested exemptions from arbitrarily specified completion dates do not, in our judgement, affect terms or conditions of our operating license as contemplated by 10 CFR 170.22. 06N 8106300lTO f
