Docket No. 50-334 Mr. C. N. Dunn, Vice President Operations Division Duquesne Light Company 435 Sixth Avenue Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 15219 I

Dear Mr. Dunn:

In the systems review of the Beaver Yalley, Unit No.1 pipestress reanalysis, we have identified the following areas which are to be addressed during your seismic pipestress reanalysis.

1.

All pipe runs analyzed with SHOCK 2 must be identified.

2.

Request the following full size drawings:

RM-21B i

RM-27A, B RM-29A, B, C, D RM-37A RM-39A, 8 3.

Reanalysis of the Primary Component Cooling Water Heat Exchanger discharge piping.

Lines:

18"-WR-14-151 Q3 f

18"-WR-15-151 Q3 18"-WR-16-151 Q3 30"-WR-17-151 Q3 Failure of any of these lines would result in flooding of redundant safety related equipment.

4.

Reanalysis of the following lines located in the Intake Structure.

30"-WR-171-151-Q3 30"-WR-172-151-Q 3 30"-WR-175-151-Q 3 18"-WR-154-151-Q3 12"-WR-177-151-Q3 i

Mr. C. N. Dunn Duquesne Light Company May 25,1979 Failure of any of these lines could result in possible flooding of safety related pumps. The asterisked line, unlike the other lines was not considered safety-related during the plant design and was nev( r seismically analyzed. This line runs above and adjacent to diver Water Pump 18 and can only be isolated from the seismically designed piping by a manually operated butterfly valve which is normally open during plant operation.

5.

The cooling water discharge lines from the Emergency Diesel Generator Cooling System Heat Exchangers downstream of the normal open isolation valves are not seismically qualified.

These lines are located in the diesel generator compartments and their failure could impact on the operation of the emergency diesels. A seismic analysis should be perfonned on these lines.

6.

The discharge lines of the Quench Spray Pumps have not been proposed for reanalysis.

10"-QS-3-153-Q3 10"-QS-4-153-Q3 1

8"-QS-22-153-Q3 8"-QS-23-153-Q3 Justify that reanalysis of the above lines is not necessary.

7.

The Recirculation Spray Piping both inside and outside containment with the exception of the lines listed below is not being reanalyzed.

Justify that reanalysis of the Recirculation Spray System is not l

necessary.

I 12"-RS-5-153-Q 3 12"-RS-7-153-Q3 12"-RS-8-153-Q3 8.

Verify that the discharge lines from the Control Room Air Condition Condensers, the Charging Pump Coolers, and Line 6"-WR-53-151-Q have been seismicially analyzed by an acceptable method. Thes$

lines are part of the River Water System.

Mr. C. N. Dunn 3-May 25,1979 Duquense Light Company In the above requirements for reanalysis, Duquesne Light Company may elect to justify why a reanalysis is not required. This justification should be provided to the NRC within one week following receipt of this letter.

If you have any questions, please let us know.
