NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION j f. Y )f j WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555

???L[),l April 10, 1979 Docket No. 50-334 LICENSEE: Duquesne Light Company FACILITY: Beaver Valley Power Station, Unit No.1 MEETING

SUMMARY

- PIPE STRESS ANALYSIS REVIEW The staff met with the licensee and Stone and Webster Engineering Corpo:ation (S&W) at the S&W offices in Boston, Massachusetts on March 29 and 30, 1979 to review the progress to date and early analyses of pipe stresses in safety related systems.

The list of attendees is attached as Enclosure 1.

S&W presented an overview of their efforts during the past two weeks.

The piping systems are being identified by the S&W designation as Q1, Q2, and Q3 systems.

This designation corresponds to the quality group listing as follows:

S&W NRC Q1 Quality Group A Q2 Quality Group B Q3 Quality Group C & D The piping systems are also being identified by those that were analyzed by hand calculations and those by SH0CK 2.

By Duquesne Light Company's (DLC) direction, S&W is putting priority efforts on systems for shutdown and for safety injection.

Quality group D systems which used SHOCK 2 analysis will be analyzed later.

S&W is also verifying the MSK's to as-built drawings (MSK= Mechanical Sketch; ESK= Electrical Sketch) and modifying the computer decks where required to accurately model the systems to be analyzed. Most of the pipe stress computer runs have been made but not checked against the as-builts. Whenever changes are required due to changes in the as-builts, the piping systems involved are being reanalyzed.

Some runs have been made on NUPIPE due to input or modeling problems with PIPESTRESS/SH0CK 3.

. April 10, 1979 Limited review has begun on the hangers, supports, and component nozzels. A flow diagram of the review underway was discussed and it was specifically noted that the BVPS reanalysis is not currently considering soil structure interaction as an interim fix.

In a discussion of the systems being reviewed, S&W categorized piping systems at the BVPS as being analyzed generally as 6 inches and under by hand calculations, 2 inches and under was field run and hand calculated, and seismic category piping over 6 inches by PIPESTRESS/SH0CK 2.

Each piping system involved in the review is being identified along with the specific analysis method used. Where records fail to show which method was used, a decision will be made by DLC on reanalysis by PIPESTRESS/SH0CK 3.

In the course of discussions, two engineering packages were reviewed on completed pipestress analyses.

The as-built drawings for all safety injection and shutdown piping was reviewed as well as the list of effected systems for completeness.
