Surry Power Station's Technical Specification 6.3.e on page TS 6.4-6 states in essence that respiratory equipment used at the-station must meet ihe U. S. Bureau of Hines approval or the equipment mu~t be evaluated on the basis of reliable test information that the material and performance characteristics of the equipment are at least equal to those affored by --.-: U.S. Bureau of Mines approved equipment of t~e same typer ., The A.E.C. is giving the company a citation in regards to the above
- for using fresh air double-bib hoods supplied by Defense Apparel Company.
- The prooacm arises in the fact that the Bureau of Mines has no comparable
*equipment.
- I have. di*scusse.:I this (-1ith Mr. Lowel 1 Parker, a Westinghouse Healt;h Physics Technican who has been temporarily working at the station. He has informed me that Westinghouse has facilities for the testing of such equip-ment. I have given him the plastic suit and hood *and would 1 ike to have the equipment tested at your facility if you are in agreement. I will need, the ~ertification papers with the .recommended protection factor (a protection factor greater *than 1000 cannot be used except-as authorized by the Commission.

Here is some information you may or may not have. I thought I would ~end it in case you had not seen *;t before. I have entlosed a picture of the test booth an4 the test cards I invented for the test-
.ing* of respirators to comply with the AEC.' s criteria.
The test chamber is somewhat similar to the* research models and
.so are most of the tests; the big difference is that each* individual i~ tested.in his own mask instead of one general purpose mask for all .
. I have-enclosed a copy of a-typical work card and actual test results of an individual. As you know, the Government sets a ma.ximum percent leakage of 1.0% and an average of 0.5% for a full face respi~ --
* .rater, and for the continuous flow hood a maximum of 0.1% and an
_average of 0.05%. This, of course, is for a protection factor of*lOO full face and 1000 continuous flow types (hoods, etc.) If you will
*._ note in the literature, though, the suit is only allo"tted a P.F. of 4; could this be the thing that the AEC was looking at while making their .
