RICHMOND, VIRGIN IA 23261 February.15, 1978:

Mr. Edson G. Case, Acting Director Serial No. 074 Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation PO&M/DLB:das U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Docket No. 50-281 Washington, D.C. 20555 License No. DPR-37 Attn: Mr. Robert W. Reid, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 4

Dear Mr. Case:

The purpose of this letter is to present the Surry Unit No. 2 steam genera-tor surveillance program for the forthcoming outage which is scheduled to begin on or about March 15, 1978. The program will consist of the following:

1. Eddy current testing of U-bends as follows:
a. Unplugged tubes in all steam generators rows 1-5, columns 1-92 tested *at 100 KHZ using beaded flex probe.
b. Any tubes which give indications at 100 KHZ will be reprobed at 400 KHZ. .
2. Tube gauging will be conducted in the cold legs of all steam genera-tors utilizing probe sizes 0.610" and 0.540'\ Extent of gauging is as indicated on Figure 1 (dashed line). * *
3. Tube gauging will be conducted in the hot legs of all steam genera-tors utilizing three different eddy current probe sizes (0.540",

0.610", and 0.650" diameters). Extent of gauging is indicated in Figure 1 (solid line). The 15% strain contour at .11.5 EFPM past closure was utilized as the basis for the boundary.

4. Wrapper to shell annulus measurements will be performed in steam gen-erator A.
5. Handhole inspections using photographs will be performed to inspect flow slots and determine the extent of hourglassing on the visible tube support plates in all steam generators.
6. All tubes which did not pass a .650" probe during the inspection of October 1977 will be tested as well as surrounding tubes for a dis-tance of 2 tubes in all directions. For any surrounding tube which does not pass the .650 11 probe, all of its surrounding tubes for a dis-tance of 2 tubes in all directions will be tested; this process con-tinuing until no further indications are found.
