RAI LAR-17-037-2, Critical Sections - SNC proposed Definition of "structural member" Don/Jordan, On yesterdays (7/26/18) Public Call regarding the proposed response to RAI LAR-17-037-2 on Critical Sections, we took the action to provide a definition for the term structural member, as used in proposed criterion 9. The following is text is proposed for inclusion in the Bases section of our LAR, and would provide the guidance applicable to proposed License Condition 2.D.(13)(a)9:

• The term structural member as used in the critical sections criterion refers to a segment of a nuclear island structure for which the UFSAR Tier 2* tables define minimum steel reinforcement. For example, UFSAR Tier 2*

Table 3H.5-3, describes one segment as Wall Section 1, 6, Elevation 180-0 to 135-3, and defines the required and minimum provided area of steel for that segment/structural member.

Please share this information with the technical staff, and let us know when you will be ready to discuss this. We have the necessary people available today, if staff is ready to discuss.

It is our understanding that this is the only remaining item to be resolved prior to submission of the next supplement (S4) of LAR-17-037, assuming the remaining discussions in the draft response provided on 6/12 satisfy the staffs questions. (Note that the 6/12 draft will still have to be revised to address the revised proposed criteria 7, 8, and 9, as they differ from the condition we envisioned when this response was drafted; however, much of the supporting discussions will be unchanged.)
