No: II-14-028 May 13, 2014 CONTACT: Roger Hannah 404-997-4417 Joey Ledford 404-997-4416 NRC Schedules Meeting to Discuss Annual Assessment of Turkey Point Nuclear Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled a meeting on May 21 to discuss the agencys assessment of safety performance during 2013 at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Florida Power & Light Co., is located about 25 miles south of Miami near Homestead, Fla.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with a brief presentation at the Courtyard by Marriott, 2905 NE 9th St., in Homestead. That session will be followed by an open house/poster session explaining the NRCs role and the NRC staff will be available to answer questions on the safety performance of the plant last year.

Our resident and region-based inspectors spend many hours monitoring plant activities to ensure that the plant operates safely, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. We hold these meetings every year to make our staff available to people who live close to the plant and answer questions about our oversight.

A letter sent from the NRC Region II office to plant officials addresses the performance of the plant during 2013 and will serve as the basis for the meeting discussion. It is available on the NRC website.

The NRC review concluded that the Turkey Point plant operated in a manner that preserved public health and safety and protected the environment. Based on the plants performance, the NRC staff plans to continue the detailed routine or baseline inspections this year that all nuclear power plants receive.

Unit 3 received some additional NRC oversight due to a white performance indicator related to the number of unplanned scrams that occurred during the performance period. A supplemental inspection was performed earlier this year to ensure that FP&L had adequately addressed the root and contributing causes of the issue.

The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess plant performance. The colors start with green, which has very low safety significance, to white, yellow or red, based on the significance of the issues. Inspection findings and performance indicators are updated on the NRCs website each quarter.

Current performance information for Turkey Point Unit 3 and Unit 4 is available on the NRC website.
