No: 18-058 November 13, 2018 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 Atomic Safety and Licensing Board to Hear Oral Arguments In December on Hearing Request for Turkey Point Subsequent License Renewal A Nuclear Regulatory Commission Atomic Safety and Licensing Board will hear oral arguments, Tuesday, Dec. 4, on a hearing request regarding the subsequent license renewal application for Turkey Point Units 3 and 4 near Miami. The Board is composed of members of the Atomic Safety and Licensing Board Panel, which is an independent body within the NRC that conducts adjudicatory hearings and renders decisions on legal challenges to licensing actions.

The Board will hear arguments on contentions filed by the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy, and a group filing from Friends of the Earth, Natural Resources Defense Council and Miami Waterkeeper (Joint Petitioners). The contentions challenge Florida Power & Lights request to renew the Turkey Point licenses for an additional 20 years.

The oral argument will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Dec. 4, at the city of Homesteads Council Chambers, 100 Civic Court in Homestead, Fla. Members of the public and media are welcome to observe the oral argument, but participation will be limited to the representatives of SACE, the Joint Petitioners, FP&L, and NRC staff. Those planning to attend should arrive at least 20 minutes prior to the scheduled start time of the event to allow for security screening. No signs or any type of demonstration will be permitted during the oral argument.

Documents related to the hearing request are available on the NRCs Electronic Hearing Docket by clicking on the folder entitled Turkey Point 50-250 & 50-251-SLR on the left side of the page.

More information regarding the role of the ASLB in the licensing process is available on the NRC website.
