NRC Schedules Open House to Discuss Annual Assessment of Turkey Point Nuclear Plant
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff has scheduled an open house on Wednesday, March 18
to discuss the agencys assessment of safety performance during 2014 at the Turkey Point nuclear power plant.
The plant, operated by Florida Power & Light Co., is located about 25 miles south of Miami near
Homestead, Fla.
The open house and poster session is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott, 2905
NE 9th St., in Homestead. NRC staff will be available to answer questions on the safety performance of the
plant last year or any other concerns expressed by members of the public.
NRC inspectors continually evaluate each nuclear plants safety, and each year we take a detailed look
at that information to identify any trends and help plan future inspections, said NRC Region II Administrator
Victor McCree. Inspection results are available throughout the year, but these annual meetings allow us to
talk to local residents and answer any questions they may have.
A letter sent from the NRC Region II office to plant officials addresses the performance of the plant
during 2014 and will serve as the basis for the open house. It is available on the NRC website.
The NRC review concluded that the Turkey Point plant operated in a manner that preserved public
health and safety and protected the environment. Based on the plants performance, the NRC staff plans to
continue the detailed routine or baseline inspections this year that all nuclear power plants receive.
The NRC uses color-coded inspection findings and performance indicators to assess plant performance.
The colors start with green, which has very low safety significance, to white, yellow or red, based on the
significance of the issues. Inspection findings and performance indicators are updated on the NRCs website
each quarter.
Current performance information for Turkey Point Unit 3 and Unit 4 is available on the NRC website.
