ISSUANCE OF RENEWED OPERATING LICENSE FOR THE WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION Pursuant to the Commissions direction in its July 25, 2005, staff requirements memorandum (SRM) for COMSECY-05-0025, titled Renewal of Full-power Operating License for Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2, that directed the staff to notify the Commission via memorandum three days prior to the issuance of a renewed license, the staff is informing the Commission that the renewed facility operating license for the Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS) is ready to be issued on November 20, 2008.

By letter dated September 27, 2006, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation submitted its application for a renewed operating license for WCGS. The staff reviewed the license renewal application (LRA) in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Parts 51 and 54 (10 CFR Parts 51 and 54). Region IV also performed inspections, as described in a January 28, 2008, memorandum from Elmo E. Collins, Regional Administrator, Region IV. The staff documented the results of its safety review in NUREG-1915, Safety Evaluation Report Related to the License Renewal of the Wolf Creek Generating Station, dated October 2008. The staff also documented the results of its environmental review in a supplemental environmental impact statement published in May 2008 as NUREG-1437, Generic Environmental Impact Statement for License Renewal of Nuclear Plants, Supplement 32, Regarding Wolf Creek Generating Station.

In accordance with 10 CFR 54.25, the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) reviewed the LRA for WCGS. The ACRS completed its review during its 555th meeting, held on September 4-5, 2008. Its findings are documented in a letter to the Commission dated September 17, 2008. In its letter, the ACRS concluded the renewal of the operating license for WCGS should be approved.

The Commissioners Pursuant to the June 5, 2002, SRM for SECY-02-0088 titled Turkey Point Nuclear Plant, Units 3 and 4, Renewal of Full-power Operating Licenses, that authorizes the Director of the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation (NRR) to issue all future uncontested license renewals without prior Commission authorization, the Director of NRR will issue the renewed facility operating license No. NPF-42 for WCGS.
