University of Michigan Ann Arbor, Michigan The Great Lakes have a long history of introductions -

intentional and unintentional - of aquatic nonindigenous species. The list now includes 183 species based primarily on Mills et al. (1993), Ricciardi (2001) and Ricciardi (2006), plus two more recently verified introductions: viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS), and Hemimysis anomala. The documented number of aquatic nonindigenous species in the Great Lakes is best interpreted as a minimum. Identification depends on our ability to find, recognize, verify, and document new species, which is, in turn, dependent on our ability to adequately sample the Great Lakes ecosystem. In addition, the list presented here only includes species that were not native to any part of the Great Lakes basin. There are other species that are documented as native to part of the basin, but invaded other parts of the basin due to human-expedited mechanisms. Examples of the latter are the sea lamprey and the rusty crayfish.

Here we present an interim update to the list as an Excel spreadsheet available for download. Great Lakes Aquatic Nonindigenous Species List - NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory attributed Vector(s) of Introduction, and (general) Description.

This will be replaced during 2007 by a database search engine associated with the U.S. Geological Survey's NAS database (see link below). The available information will be expanded to include more information and links to detailed fact sheets (presently under development by Dr. Anthony Ricciardi, McGill University) for many of the species.
