RE: Fish Species at Nine Mile Leslie, I am not aware of this species being observed in the Nine Mile Point vicinity, nor do our records indicate that the species being caught in impingement sampling or lake sampling. My conclusion is based on data in the comprehensive report prepared by Lawler, Matusky & Skelly Engineers (LMS) in May 1983 entitled Nine Mile Point Aquatic Ecology Summary (1973 - 1981). This reference is 4.3-27 in the NMP license renewal ER (I seem to recall we provided a copy of this to you, but if not, let me know and we can send it as I have an electronic file). In addition, I reviewed all impingement reports developed after 1981 through 1997 and the round whitefish was not listed.

As an aside, I would caution you to check the Fitzpatrick records carefully. The LMS report I referenced above included data from Fitzpatrick and states:

"While the remaining seven species have been reported from Lake Ontario by various researchers over the years, either their behavior or low numbers have precluded their occurrence from the nine-year lake sampling or the impingement sampling at Unit 1 or the JAF plant." (page 2-70)

The round whitefish is one of the seven species listed in the LMS report as not being observed at Nine Mile Point.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Fish Species at Nine Mile Carla,

Samuel Hernandez-Quinones - RE: Fish Species at Nine Mile Page 2 FitzPatrick is an alternate proposed site for Grand Gulf, therefore, we are trying to maintain consistency with the reviews. Please confirm if there have been any documented sightings of the round whitefish (Prosopium cylindraceum) at Nine Mile. We plan to provide this information in the final SEIS.

Thanks, Leslie C. Fields, PM US NRC 301-415-1186 fax 301-415-2002
