Dear Senator Kerry,

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission, referring to the proposed 20 % increase in output of tile Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor in Vernon, Vermont, has stated in a recently released repon.

that "there is reasonable assurance that the health and safety of the public will not be endanger by operation in the proposed-manner,".-

As someone who lives in harms way of this 33 year old reactor, "reasonable assurance" is NC)0.

very comforting and is, in fact, completely UNACCEPTABLE. As a constituent of yours, I ur We you to push for a more thorough, independent assessment of the impact that such an uprate would have on a plant this old and the risk of greater levels of radiation being released into the surrounding communities. Considering the potential cost of a nuclear accident both in human and environmental terms, the benefits of a slower, more cautious evaluative process seem well worth the money and time spent.

1 urge you to also push for an unbiased, thorough assessment of the current impact that the radiation from this nuclear plant is having on the humans, animals, air, water, and land in the 5Id mile radius surrounding the reactor. It may turn out that, as with Yankee Rowe, it is time to shut this plant down rather than rim the risk of operating it any further, much less at higher, more dangerous levels.

Thank your for your assistance with this very serious issue.

Sincerely, s _ /a//t Z5/3
