March 8, 2007 The Honorable Bernard Sanders United States Senate Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator Sanders:

This letter responds to your letter dated March 5, 2007, to Chairman Klein, in which you requested a 30-day extension to the comment period on the draft supplemental environmental impact statement (EIS) for license renewal of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Station.

In the interest of improving opportunities for public involvement the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) used a 75-day comment period for the draft supplemental EIS. NRC regulations require a 45-day comment period for this type of action. In addition, the NRC held public meetings to give members of the public an opportunity to provide comments in person and to interact with the NRC staff.

The comment period for the draft supplemental EIS ended on March 7, 2007. However, as we stated at the public meetings on January 31, 2007, and at the meeting with Vermont State legislators on February 27, 2007, we will consider any comments received after March 7, 2007, to the extent that it is practicable to do so. On past license renewal reviews, we have considered comments received up to two weeks after the end of the comment period.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Luis Reyes Executive Director for Operations
