February 13, 2007The Honorable Patrick LeahyUnited States Senate Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator Leahy:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to yourletter of January 26, 2007, regarding a public meeting in Montpelier to discuss the Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement for the potential license renewal of the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant. The NRC worked with the Vermont Legislature to accommodate the request for a briefing inMontpelier following the public meetings in Brattleboro. However, NRC procedures provide that all public meetings be noticed 10 days prior to the meeting date, so that all interested members of the public are aware that the meeting is occurring. The Vermont Legislature has an equal responsibility to the public and all of their briefings must be public. Given the timing of the request and our respective constraints, they decided to postpone the meeting to allow the NRC to follow our notification procedures for public meetings. We continued to work together and are pleased to inform you that a public briefing of the Vermont Legislature has been arranged for the afternoon of February 27, 2007. The NRC is committed to conducting business in an open and publicly accessible forum and ispleased that the Vermont Legislature was willing to reschedule the briefing to allow for public notification.Sincerely,
