Unresolved Items Unresolved items were not identified during this inspection.

5.

Nuclear Service Water Installation The field installation of the underground nuclear service water (NSW)

system piping was examined. Approximately 1600 feet of NSW piping and 400 welds have been installed for each of the three units of the Cherokee plant. In addition approximately 800 feet and 200 welds have been installed in the section of the NSW system that is common to all three units.

Duke Power has elected to install the NSW pipe for all three units simultaneous-ly where the NSW pipes for all units are located in a common ditch.

Struc-tures placed over the ditch area would make placement of units 2 and 3 NSW piping not feasible at a later date.

This work is in conformance with Duke Power's letter of July 27, 1979 to NRC licensing which identified that yard piping (NSW) for unit 3 is being installed.

The inspector reviewed the following procedures, drawings and checklists to determine that the NSW piping is being followed by QC to assure. proper handling, cooling protection and installation.
