in letter dated November 22,1996, (LR-N96379) Public Service Electric and Gas (PSE&G) committed to provide design and licensing basis training to engineering personnel. Specifically, PSE&G committed to the following long term corrective actions:

!

1. Corrective Action ll.E.1 and Corrective Action Ill.E.1 of Attachmerit 2:

A Design and Licensing Basis Overview Training Course is being developed and will be available to Engineering Support Personnel by l l

March 31,1997. The training will emphasize the importance of the design  !

and licensing basis, and the role each individual has in the safe  !

conservative operation of the plants.

2. Corrective Action ll.E.2 and Corrective Action Ill.E.3 of Attachment 2: .

System specific design basis training covering the contents, use of, and j L '

i importance of design bases and licensing bases will be established and L conducted for System Managers and Design Engineers by March 31,

1998.

Support Personnel, is being extended from March 31,1997 to April 30,1997. By March 31,1997, approximately 75% of the approximately 350 Engineering

'

Support Personnel will have been trained. The remaining personnel have been scheduled for training during the month of April.

In addition, corrective actions ll.E.2 and Ill.E.3 in Attachment 2, regarding system specific design basis training of System Managers and Design l'

Engineers, are being deleted. The deletion of these commitments is appropriate given the actions and commitments discussed in Attachment 2 of PSE&G's .

response, dated February 11,1997, to the NRC's " Request for Information  !

Pursuant to 10CFR50.54(f) Regarding Adequacy and Availability of Design  ;

Bases information". These actions and commitments are expected to result in  :

improvements in the understanding of the design bases similar to the original commitment. ,

These commitment changes were evaluated in accordance with the " Guideline i for Managing NRC Commitments", Revision 1, issued by the Nuclear Energy Institute on June 9,1995. The guideline recommends timely notification of j revised commitments to the NRC when the origina! commitments were identified i as a long term corrective action in response to an NRC Notice of Violation.

PSE&G is hereby notifying the NRC that PSE&G is modifying the above commitments.
