Progress Energy JUN 1 2 2003 SERLAL: BSEP 03-0098 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555-0001 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-325 AND 50-324/LICENSE NOS. DPR-71 AND DPR-62 MAY 2003 MONTHLY OPERATING REPORTS Ladies and Gentlemen:

In accordance with Technical Specification (TS) 5.6.4 for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. I and 2, Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc. is submitting the enclosed Monthly Operating Reports for May 2003. These reports are being submitted to the NRC by the 15th day of the month following the calendar month covered by the reports, as specified in TS 5.6.4.

Additionally, during the preparation of these reports, an error was discovered in the submittal of the April 2003 Monthly Operating Reports (SERIAL: BSEP 03-0073) dated May 8, 2003. In Enclosure 2, Appendix B (i.e., Unit Shutdowns for Unit 2) Line 1, duration hours were listed as 86.7 and Line 2 as 32.9. The correct duration hours for Line 1 is 111.5 and duration hours for Line 2 is 8.1, for the April 2003 report. These changes do not impact the numbers listed in Enclosure 2, Appendix A (i.e., Operating Data Report for Unit 2).

There are no regulatory commitments being made in this submittal. Please refer questions regarding this submittal to Mr. Leonard R. Beller, Supervisor - Licensing/Regulatory Programs, at (910) 457-2073.

Sincerely, Edward T. O'Neil Manager - Support Services Brunswick Steam Electric Plant DRC/drc
