Brunswick Steam Electric Plant, Unit Nos. 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-325 and 50-324/License Nos. DPR-71 and DPR-62 August 2004 Monthly Operating Reports Ladies and Gentlemen:
In accordance with Technical Specification (TS) 5.6.4 for the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant (BSEP), Unit Nos. 1 and 2, Carolina Power & Light Company, now doing business as Progress Energy Carolinas, Inc., is submitting the enclosed Monthly Operating Reports for August 2004. These reports are being submitted to the NRC by the 15th day of the month following the calendar month covered by the report as specified in TS 5.6.4.
No regulatory commitments are contained in this letter. Please refer any questions regarding this submittal to Mr. Leonard R. Beller, Supervisor - Licensing/Regulatory Programs, at (910) 457-2073.

2 Unit No. 1 was shutdown due to a loss of offsite power during Hurricane Charley.

SUMMARY
- The August 2004, shutdown was by manual insertion of a Reactor Protection System trip from 69 percent of rated thermal power. The plant was restarted on August 17, and placed back on line on August 18, 2004.

As a result, the present value for Design Electrical Rating (i.e., net megawatts electric (MWe)) has been revised from 867 MWe to 935 MWe to reflect current equipment limitations and testing activities associated with the first phase of EPU implementation. The Design Electrical Rating value is subject to further revision as EPU testing and implementation activities continue.

4 Unit No. 2 was shutdown as required by Technical Specifications due to one of ten Suppression Chamber-to-Drywell vacuum breakers being open. Details of the event and corrective actions will be documented in Licensee Event Report (LER) 2-04-002, due September 27,2004.
SUMMARY
- The July 2004, shutdown was by manual insertion of a Reactor Protection System trip from 23 percent of rated thermal power. The plant responded as expected during and after the shutdown. The plant remained shutdown for the month of July 2004, was restarted on August 1, and placed back on line on August 2, 2004.
