UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION III 2443 WARRENVILLE ROAD, SUITE 210 LISLE, IL 60532-4352 July 10, 2013

Mr. Larry Meyer Site Vice President NextEra Energy Point Beach, LLC 6610 Nuclear Road Two Rivers, WI 54241

SUBJECT:

POINT BEACH NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1- NOTIFICATION OF AN NRC SUPPLEMENTAL INSPECTION AND INFORMATION REQUEST

Dear Mr. Meyer:

By letter dated January 2, 2013 (ADAMS ML13004A280), the NRC communicated to you the final significance determination for a finding having low-to-moderate safety significance (White) at your Point Beach Nuclear Plant, Unit 1. The finding involved the failure to have work instructions and procedures appropriate to the circumstances to ensure that, following the final alignment of the turbine to the Unit 1 turbi ne-driven auxiliary feedwater pump during a refueling outage in November 2011. This ultimately resulted in failure of the turbine-to-pump coupling on May 21, 2012.

By letter dated April 16, 2013, we were notified by your staff that you were ready for the NRC to conduct our supplemental inspection to review the actions taken to address the White finding. Accordingly, we plan to conduct a supplemental inspection, beginning on August 5, 2013, at the Point Beach Nuclear Plant using Inspection Procedure 95001, "Supplemental Inspection for One or Two White Inputs in a Strategic Performance Area." This on-site inspection is scheduled to be performed August 5 through August 9, 2013, and the inspection will be led by Diana Betancourt-Roldán, Point Beach Senior Resident Inspector (Acting). The results of this inspection will be documented in NRC Inspection Report 05000266/2013009. In order to minimize the impact to your on-site resources and to ensure a productive inspection for both organizations, we have enclosed a request for documents needed for this inspection.

The documents identified are those that the inspectors will need prior to and upon arrival at the site. It is important that all of these documents are up-to-date and complete in order to minimize the number of additional documents requested during the on-site portion of the inspection. We have discussed the schedule for these inspection activities with your staff and understand that our regulatory contact for this inspection will be Mrs. Kim Locke of your organization. If there are any questions about this inspection or the material requested, please call or email Mrs. Betancourt at (920) 755-2309 or Diana.Betancourt@nrc.gov
