RESPONSE TO ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY COMMENTS REGARDING THE FINAL SITE-SPECIFIC SUPPLEMENT 7a TO THE GENERIC ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT STATEMENT FOR LICENSE RENEWAL OF NUCLEAR PLANTS REGARDING NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 (DOCKET NUMBERS: 50-338 AND 50-339)

Dear Jamie Davis:

On August 26, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Region 3, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System ML24247A007) provided comments to the final site-specific environmental impact statement pertaining to the license renewal of North Anna Power Station (North Anna), Units 1 and 2 (NUREG-1437, Supplement 7a). In that letter, EPA has one suggestion:

Due to the advance nature of the Study [the Final Environmental Impact Statement], the NRC continue to monitor conditions to ensure that no significant impacts result from the reissuance of the license.

Regarding the suggestion, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)s regulatory process is a combination of licensing and oversight. The issued license and requirements specified within establish the operating parameters for the safe operation of the plant. The NRCs Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) is the program to inspect, measure, and assess the safety and security performance of operating commercial nuclear power plants, and to respond to any decline in their performance. The NRC will continue to implement the ROP to monitor conditions at North Anna to ensure it meets NRC requirements for operation and respond to any decline in performance ensuring no significant impacts result from the reissuance of the renewed licenses.
