Notification of Unusual Event on Thursday, September 1, 1988, at 2250 hours0.026 days <br />0.625 hours <br />0.00372 weeks <br />8.56125e-4 months <br />, a Notification of Unusual Event (NOUE) was declared in accordance with Emergency Plan Implementing Procedure EC-02 Emergency Classifications. This procedure requires that a NOUE be declared if the High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS) initiates and injects.

Clinton Power Station was operating at approximately 100% power in Mode 1.

On Thursday, September 1, 1988, at 2240 hours0.0259 days <br />0.622 hours <br />0.0037 weeks <br />8.5232e-4 months <br /> the High Pressure Core Spray (HPCS) system initiated and injected water into the reactor for a period of 28 seconds. The automatic initiation occurred while maintenance surveillance activities were in progress on a reactor water level transmitter.

The State of Illinois was notified of the NOUE at 2300 hours0.0266 days <br />0.639 hours <br />0.0038 weeks <br />8.7515e-4 months <br /> on Thursday, September 1, 1988; the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) '

Incident Response Center was notified at 2336 hours0.027 days <br />0.649 hours <br />0.00386 weeks <br />8.88848e-4 months <br />; and the NRC L Resident Inspector was notified at 2330 hours0.027 days <br />0.647 hours <br />0.00385 weeks <br />8.86565e-4 months <br />. '

The plant responded by shutting the injection valve and securing the HPCS pump. Plant operating parametors were checked and verified to be .

operating within normal limits.

The Shift Supervisor terminated the NOUE at 2300 hours0.0266 days <br />0.639 hours <br />0.0038 weeks <br />8.7515e-4 months <br />. Since the NOUE only lasted approximately ten minutes, the notifications to the State of Illinois at 2300 1.ours and the NRC Incident Respons: Center at 2336 hours0.027 days <br />0.649 hours <br />0.00386 weeks <br />8.88848e-4 months <br /> included the NOUE termination.  !
