EXECUTIVE

SUMMARY

This progress report presents data from field and laboratory work carried out from May I through July 31, 1986. Also included are the results of observations on gonad development in teredinids collected from April through June 1986.

All field work during this quarter was performed by GPU Nuclear personnel.

Salinity, water temperatures, dissolved oxygen, and pH were measured at each of the 20 exposure stations during the three periods of exposure panel exchange.

Teredinids were found at two of the 20 stations (Stations 1 and 8)in May, and at Station 1 in July. No teredinids were found in any panels collected in June. Limnorids occurred in panels collected at Stations 2,3, and 4A in May, at Stations 1, 2, 4, and 4A in I June, and at Stations 1,2, 3,4, 4A,5, and 15 in July.

Water quality parameters were within normal limits for the period.

Teredinid gonads were primarily in the early_ active phase in April, and in the late active phase in May and June.

Belmore REPORT NO.15352 For the Period May I to July 31,1986 from BATTELLE New England Marine Research Laboratory 397 Washington Street Duxbury, Massachusetts 02332 INTRODUCTION Battelle New England Marine Research Laboratory is conducting an investigation to determine whe+her the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station is affecting the resident marine borer population in Oyster Creek to the extent that the I population is contributing significantly to marine borer-caused damage in Barnegat Bay, New Jersey.

A description of the program and procedures used may be found in the tenth annual report titled " Study of Woodborer Populations in Relation to the Oyster Creek Generating Station," dated May 15, 1986.

This report presents data for the forty-fif th quarterly period from May I to July 31,1986.

I I 2 PROCEDURES AND INTERIM DATA I Exposure Panels Personnel from GPU's Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station retrieved and I replaced the long-term (6-month), short-term (1-month), and special 12-month exposure panels with new untreated presoaked (for two weeks) panels at the 20 exposure sites in Barnegat Bay and adjacent waters (Figure 1) during the periods of May 12-13, June 9-10, and July 14-15, 1986.

Table 1 describes the geographic locations of the exposure sites. Data from the laboratory examination of the panels are presented in Tables 2 through 5.

Teredinids were collected from Stations 1 and 8 in May, and from Station 1 in July. No teredinids occurred in any panels collected during June. All teredinids collected were too small to be identified to any taxonomic level below the family Teredinidae. A I total of 92 teredinids were collected during the quarter, with 91 of them from Station 1.

The number of limnorids and limnorid tunnels observed in the exposure panels rote sharply from May through July (Table 5). This increase is consistent with what has occurred in previous years during the summer quarter.

Water Quality Salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, and pH were measured at each 1

exposure panel site by the GPU Nuclear field team. Results for May, June, and July 1986 j are presented in Tables 6 through 8. No unusual variations in water quality were noted

! during the report period.

Teredinid Gonadal Development Studies Table 9 shows the developmental stage of gonads of teredinid borers collected in April, May, and June 1986. Only teredinids from special 12-month panels were available for observation during this quarterly period. Most borers from the April collection were in the early active phase of gonad development. During May and June, most of the gonads were in the late active stage.

All exposure panel racks suspended in a minimum water depth at mean low water of at least three feet. Racks hung with nylon line from existing structures so the bottom panels are close to, but not touching the bottom.
