L EXECUTIVE
SUMMARY
( This progress report presents data from field and laboratory work during the period May 1 to July 31, 1985. Also included are the results of observations on gonad r development in samples collected in April, May, and June,1985.
L All field work during this quarter was carried out by GPU Nuclear personnel.
Temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and pH were measured and recorded at each of the 20 stations during the three periods of exposure panelexchange.
The exposure panel rack at Station 4A was found out of the water at both the June and July panel exchange periods. Each time, it was put back in the water.
No shipworms were found in any of the 1-month and 6-month exposure panels
( rernoved in May and June,1985 and only at two stations from the panels removed in July, 1985.
{ Limnoria occurred as usual at Stations 1, 2, 3, 4, and 4A. In addition, one Limnoria specimen had entered the 6-month exposure panel removed in May,1985 from Station 11 at the mouth of the Forked River.
Gonad development continued to follow normal patterns. Most Bankia g were in the early-active phase through April, becoming ripe in May and spawning by June.
Teredo navalis tend to ripen earlier, and most were ripe and spawning through the three-month period from April to June.

( REPORT NO.15298 For the Period
{ May 1,1985 to July 31,1985 from BATTELLE New England Marine Research Laboratory 397 Washington Street
( Duxbury, Massachusetts 02332
{ INTRODUCTION Battelle's New England Marine Research Laboratory is conducting an investigation to determine whether the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station is affecting the resident marine borer popubtion in Oyster Creek to the extent that that L
population is contributing significantly to marine borer-caused damage in Barnegat Bay.
A description of the program and procedures used may be found in the ninth
( annual report titled, " Study of Woodborer Populations in Relation to the Oyster Creek Generating Station", dated May 15,1985.
[ 1his report presents data for the forty-first quarterly period from May 1 to July 31,1985.

Exposure panels f
L "Ihe long-term and short-term exposure panels were retrieved and replaced
( with new untreated pre-soaked (for two weeks) panels at the 20 exposure sites in Barnegat Bay and adjacent waters (Figure 1) during the periods of May Ibl4, June 10-11, and July 8-9,1985. Long-term and short-term panels at all stations were retrieved and replaced by personnel from GPU's Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station.
Table 1 describes the geographical locations of the exposure sites. [hta from the laboratory examination of the panels are presented in Tables 2 through 5.
f Water Quality
{ Salinity, water temperature, dissolved oxygen and pH were taken at each site by the GPU Nuclear field team. Results for May, June, and July,1985 are presented in Tables 6 through 8.
Teredinid Gonadal Development Studies Table 9 shows the gonad condition of teredinid borers collected in April, May,
[ and June,1985. Included are results from panels exposed for periods ranging from 6 to 12 months.
