South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control 2600 Bull Street Columbia, SC 29201 ATTN: Mr. Steve Thomas

SUBJECT:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856 5-Day Written Notification

Dear Mr. Thomas:

This letter is to provide the required written 5-day notification for exceeding a discharge parameter as described in the Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856. The required 24-hour notification was made to you at lf00 hours on July 18, 1984, by Mr. Arnie Cribb and Mr. Ricky Marchant.

Discharge Point 003 - Radwaste - was analyzed cn July 18, 1984.

The Oil and Grease analysis was completed at 1635 hours0.0189 days
0.454 hours
0.0027 weeks
6.221175e-4 months
. The reported value was 20.14 mg/1, which exceeds the 20 mg/l limit per release. All other analytical results were within specification.

The batch release was completed on July 17, 1984.

The cause of the out-of-specification value is postulated to be excessive amounts of soaps or cleaning agents that are introduced to our floor drain system. The floor drain system is discharged via discharge point 003. The typical Oil and Grease concentration for 003 has been less than 15 mg/1.

Certain steps were taken to help prevent exceeding the Oil and Grease parameter from future discharges. The janitorial staff was directed to minimize dumping of excessive concentrations of cleaning waters to the floor drain system. In addition, other sources, such as equipment oil leakage, are being investigated and will be corrected as part of our existing housekeeping inspection program.
