SUBJECT:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856 5-Day Written Notification

Dear Mr. Trim:

This letter is to provide the required written 5-day notification for exceeding a discharge parameter as described in the Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856. The required 24-hour notification was made to Sandra Hursey at approximately 1325 hours0.0153 days
0.368 hours
0.00219 weeks
5.041625e-4 months
on March 1, 1985.

On March 1, 1985, at approximately 1140 hours0.0132 days
0.317 hours
0.00188 weeks
4.3377e-4 months
the iron analysis was completed for Waste Monitor Tank #2 which had been released at 1030 hours0.0119 days
0.286 hours
0.0017 weeks
3.91915e-4 months
on the same day. Analysis of effluent chemistry for outfall 003 on a post-release basis had previously been approved by the Chemistry Department due to the time required to perform that analysis. The results of the analysis (sample #PN850301-02) indicated iron to be out-of-specification for the tank which had previously been released. The permit establishes a limit for iron from outfall 003 of 1.0 ppm; the analysis results indicated an iron concentration of 2.2 ppm. The volume of waste Water released was approximately 4650 gallons.

The cause of this event was due to the fact that laboratory instructions did not require the completion of the analysis prior to approving the release. Normally, the contents of tanks providing input to the Waste Monitor Tanks for release are analyzed so that problems can be identified and corrected prior to the release. However, this method was not employed for this release.

l Corrective action for future releases will be to require by procedure completion of Ph, boron, chromium, copper and iron analysis prior to Chemistry's approval for release of Waste I Monitor Tanks.
