SUBJECT:

Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856 5-Day Written Notification

Dear Mr. Trim:

This letter is to provide the required written 5-day notification for exceeding a discharge parameter as described in the Virgil C.

Summer Nuclear Station NPDES Permit #SC0030856. The required 24-hour notification was made to you at approximately 1329 hours0.0154 days
0.369 hours
0.0022 weeks
5.056845e-4 months
on January 13, 1985.

On January 13, 1985, from approximately 0230 hours0.00266 days
0.0639 hours
3.80291e-4 weeks
8.7515e-5 months
until 0715 hours0.00828 days
0.199 hours
0.00118 weeks
2.720575e-4 months
, the Virgil C. Summer Nuclear Station exceeded the pH lower limit from the Steam Generator Blowdown outfall 004. NPDES Permit

 1. SC0030856 establishes the limit of pH f rom outf all 004 to a value of 6.0 to 9.0. At approximately 0230 hours0.00266 days
0.0639 hours
3.80291e-4 weeks
8.7515e-5 months
, January 13, 1985, the lower limit of 6.0 was exceeded due to resin intrusion into the condensate system. The high temperature of the Steam Generators resulted in the breakdown of the resin into various acid compounds, thereby lowering the pH to 4.1.

The Steam Generator Blowdown discharge to outf all 004 was secured at 0715 hours0.00828 days
0.199 hours
0.00118 weeks
2.720575e-4 months
and pH was reestablished within limits at 0800 hours0.00926 days
0.222 hours
0.00132 weeks
3.044e-4 months
by the addition of ammonia into the system.

The cause of this event was due to an isolated incident and no additional correctivo action is planned.
